Sri Lanka declares nationwide curfew after deadly blasts

Sri Lankan government has declared a nationwide curfew with immediate effect after the bombings on churches and hotels on Sunday that has left over 156 dead and 400 injured.

Junior defence minister, Ruwan Wijewardene, announced the curfew.

Government officials also said major social media platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, have been blocked inside the country to prevent misinformation and rumours.

Secretary to the president, Udaya Seneviratne, said in a statement that the block “is only a temporary measure.”

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has strongly condemned the attacks.

“I condemn these attacks which targeted religious places and some hotels. We all should join hands to protect law and order.

“I have already instructed the Secretary of Defence, Tri Forces Commanders and the Inspector General of Police to take stringent action to ensure law and order in the country,” Wickremesinghe said.

Three churches where worshippers were attending Easter Sunday services recorded more victims.

Three other bombings struck luxury hotels – the Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury and Shangri-La – located in the heart of Colombo, no less than 35 foreigners died in the blasts.

Two new blasts were also recorded in the capital hours after the initial six.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
