Publisher of Sahara Reporters Omoyele Sowore has commenced hunger strike in police detention, rejecting all food and clothes taken to him by his family.

Mr Sowore was arrested for leading a protest against the Buhari administration on New Year eve in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to his online publication, the former presidential candidate has refused to eat after the police stopped his relatives from bringing him some of his books.

Sowore had asked one of his brothers to bring his books for him to read and refresh his mind but he was prevented from taking the books inside, the platform reported.

“I cannot feed my stomach when I haven’t fed my brain,” he was quoted as saying.

It was also learnt that others who were arrested alongside Sowore have joined in the hunger strike.

Sowore had earlier been arrested on August 3, 2019, in Lagos by officials of the Department of State Services for planning a protest tagged #RevolutionNow.

The publisher is facing treason charges.
