Shehu Sani claims retired doctors, nurses refusing to join coronavirus fight

Senator Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani has raised concerns alleging that some retired medical personnel were not willing to join the fight against coronavirus.

The Federal Government had advised states to recall retired doctors and nurses if need be as cases of the ravaging coronavirus increase in the country.

In a tweet on Saturday, Sani, former lawmaker representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, called on Nigerians to beg the retirees to come out of retirement.

“Some of the retired medical personnel who are recalled to duty are refusing to show up, please make una beg them,” he said.

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, had on March 23 announced the government’s initiative.

“We have advised that some states should issue a call for retired doctors and nurses to be reabsorbed and come back to service for this particular period if the need arises. They can be recalled back to active duty. They are in the reserved pool,” he said.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had claimed last year that Nigeria had more than enough doctors and that some could leave for greener pastures if they wanted.
