Sacked OAU lecturer sent to prison for demanding sex for marks

Professor Richard Akindele OAU

Dismissed lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Prof. Richard Akindele, has been remanded in prison for demanding sex to pass a female student.

The 57-year-old professor was arraigned on Monday before Justice Maureen Onyetenu of a Federal High Court, Osogbo on four counts bothering on alteration of age and demand for a sexual benefit.

He was subsequently remanded in prison.

Akindele was on September 16 2017 accused by one of his students, Ms Monica Osagie, of demanding sex from her in order to upgrade her academic result.

The Independent Corrupt Practises and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) had in a statement last week disclosed that it would charge Akindele for the alleged offence, adding that the former lecturer’s actions were contrary to Sections 8(1) (a) (ii), and 18(d) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and are punishable under the same sections.

Akindele had earlier admitted guilt to the offence but asked for plea-bargain while citing ill-health as a factor that may make him unable to stand the rigours of prison life.
