Former senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial Zone Godiya Akwashiki has died at the age of 52.
A family source said Senator Akwashiki died on Wednesday at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment after a prolonged illness.
The family described his death as “a great loss to Nasarawa State, the entire Eggon nation and the country as a whole”.
“Since in the history of Nasarawa North, Sen. Akwashiki was the best Senator Nasarawa North ever produced due to his purposeful leadership.
“His projects are in every nook and cranny of the constituency as he was the only Senator that re contested and won for a second term in the zone,” the family said.
Akwashiki was born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah village, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
He began his political career in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he served from 2011 to 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
During his first term, he was Majority Leader of the House, while he served as deputy speaker in his second term.
In 2019, he was elected senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He was re elected in the 2023 general elections under the Social Democratic Party.
At the National Assembly, Akwashiki served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter Parliamentary Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs.
On August 8, 2023, he was named chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force.
He had his early education at Government Primary School, Angba Iggah and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1987.
He attended Government Technical College, Assakio and completed his secondary education in 1993.
He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, in 2010.
Godiya Akwashiki is survived by his wife and children.
