Senate, Reps suspend plenary over death of Longjan

Senator Ignatius Longjan

The Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday suspended plenary and all legislative activities in honour of the late Senator Ignatius Longjan.

Longjan, who represented Plateau South, died on Sunday at Turkish Hospital, Abuja.

Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, shortly after resumption of plenary, moved a motion for its suspension.

Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, seconded the motion.

Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, who presided over the plenary, also announced that the red chamber would dedicate Wednesday’s plenary to the late Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu from Imo State who died last December.

Omo-Agege urged his colleagues to dress either in white or black for the valedictory session in honour of Uwajumogu.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, said Longjan would be missed by members of the National Assembly.

“It hurts once again to mourn a colleague in the 9th National Assembly in the person of Senator Ignatius Longjan,” he said.

“It is indeed sad to lose another colleague to the cold hands of death. I pray the Almighty God gives his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Longjan served as Deputy Governor of Plateau State between 2011 and 2015 under the administration of Jonah Jang.

He was also the Chief of Staff of the Governor from 2007 to 2011.
