Israel is at war with Hamas after the Palestinian militant group’s devastating and surprising attack last week that left at least 900 people dead in Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Monday that the Israeli military was going on the offense against Hamas with a force “like never before.”

Israel has now pounded the enclave with airstrikes. More than 680 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Hamas said civilian hostages would be executed and the killings broadcast if Israel targets people in Gaza without warning. The group claims to be holding more than 100 hostages, including Israeli army officers.

US President Joe Biden said at least 11 Americans were killed in the Hamas attacks and others are likely being held as hostages.
