Police, soldiers clash at INEC office in Rivers

Securitymen on patrol in Ikorodu, Lagos

Policemen and soldiers have clashed at the main gate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The discord began when policemen refused to let soldiers man the gate.

INEC officials and ad-hoc staff had alleged that their safety was not guaranteed, prompting them to all assemble at the INEC headquarters.

The soldiers barred journalists from entering the premises as they tried to gain control.

Soon, policemen fired tear-gas into the air in an attempt to disperse the soldiers.

All four lanes of the Port Harcourt-Aba expressway were blocked from the GRA junction to Waterlines near the INEC office.
