Police harass journalists at Seyi Makinde’s inauguration

Seyi Makinde

Policemen on Wednesday maltreated journalists who were covering the inauguration of Seyi Makinde as the 28th Governor of Oyo State.

Armed police officers, who claimed to be clearing the crowd from the centre of Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, charged at newsmen who were beside a camera stand mounted by state-owned Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) to monitor proceedings.

The policemen were said to have insisted on chasing the journalists away despite their accreditation tags and identity cards.

The officers and journalists engaged in war of words, requiring the intervention of senior police officers.

Makinde later took his oath of office at about 12:22 pm in company of his wife, Omini, and three children, after slight delay.

He was administered the oath of office by the Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola.

Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan, also took the oath in the company of wife and children.
