Police fire shots to disperse protesting Shiites in Abuja

Shiites protest for Zakzaky

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) have clashed again with the police in Abuja over the detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, since 2015.

The Shiites began protesting around 1:55 pm on Friday from Sultan Abubakar Road hoisting flags which literally read “Welcome you Hussein. Free Zakzaky”.

Shiites see Hussein as their first imam.

Police officers shot in the air and fired tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters who soon joined other Muslim worshippers returning from Friday Jummat prayer.

Little has been heard of El-Zakzaky since his return to Nigeria on August 16 after a botched medical trip to India.

The IMN had accused the Federal Government of attempting to kill its leader while in India.

The Federal Government, however, accused El-Zakzaky of trying to seek asylum in India.
