Abba Kyari campaigns against drug abuse

An old photo of a deputy police commissioner Abba Kyari campaigning against drug abuse has gone viral on social media.

The photo shows Kyari and another man holding written messages against drug abuse. “Say no to drugs. Yes to life,” Kyari’s message read.

The deputy police commissioner is currently suspended from the Nigeria Police Force over alleged involvement in internet fraud perpetrated by convicted fraudster Ramon Abass aka Hushpuppi in the United States.

Kyari was arrested on Monday by the police hours after being declared wanted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over alleged involvement in hard drugs.

His arrest comes amid investigation by the police over possible link to Hushpuppi.

Spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, had said at a news briefing on Monday that the agency was forced to declare Kyari wanted because he failed to honour its invitation for questioning.

“With the intelligence at our disposal, the agency believes strongly that DCP Kyari is a member of a drug cartel that operates the Brazil-Ethiopia-Nigeria illicit drug pipeline, and he needs to answer questions that crop up in an ongoing drug case in which he is the principal actor. His failure to cooperate forced the hand of the Agency and that is the reason for this press briefing,” he said.
