Peter Obi, Ebele Okaro, Ngozi Ezeonu grace actress Nkechi Nweje’s funeral in Anambra

2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, alongside actresses Ebele Okaro and Ngozi Ezeonu, are among the guests at the ongoing funeral ceremony of actress Nkechi Nweje in Anambra on Friday.

Video clips circulating online captured the solemn moment when Mr Obi, dressed in an all-black ensemble, approached the seated actresses and other dignitaries. They rose to their feet in respect as they exchanged pleasantries.

The funeral arrangements for Nkechi Nweji, who died on March 21, were publicly announced by her family. The service and interment took place at 1C Obeleagu Street, off Awka Road in Onitsha, Anambra State, starting at 10 a.m.

A reception followed at Eze Chima Primary School, also located along Awka Road.

Actress Rita Edochie, Nkechi’s sister-in-law, shared the official burial poster on Instagram to confirm the details.

She wrote, “With heavy heart I bring to you my sister-in-law actress Nkechi Nweje’s official burial arrangement. Courtesy: The family. Please check the poster and be guided. This is so sad but God Almighty knows the best.
‘Chaiiiiiiiiiii so 23rd of May 2025 I will cease to see Nkechi Nweje? But Nk, nwannem, this wasn’t our plan for 2025. Greetings great lovers of Rita Edochie. Have a great weekend.’”

Born on June 6, 1964, in Onicha Ado, Onitsha, Nkechi Nweji was a devoted Christian and a respected figure in Nollywood.

She rose to prominence with her role in the film Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha and was known for her memorable motherly characters in productions such as Royal War, Festival of Sorrow and Coming Back from Congo.

Her death, at the age of 60, was confirmed by movie producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, who expressed shock and disbelief at the loss.

Family sources disclosed that Nkechi Nweji died due to complications from a stomach surgery she had undergone in November 2024. She is survived by her husband and six children.
