There has been outrage over the killing of a man, Kolade Johnson, on Sunday by policemen from the anti-cultism unit of Lagos State Police Command.

The policemen were said to have stormed Olu Aboderin Street, Onipetesi area of Lagos in search of youths dressed wildly and wearing dreadlocks.

Eyewitnesses say the police officers then stormed an eatery in the area where football fans had just finished watching a live English Premiership League football match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

A source said that Mr Johnson, who was a friend to a man arrested by the police, challenged the operatives on why they would take away his friend.

In the process, Johnson was shot by one of the policemen. The victim was taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Ikeja, but was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors.

Immediately, angry youths blocked the two sides of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and set up bonfires, disrupting traffic in the process.

Lagos police spokesperson, Bala Elkana, said police officers were investigating to find out details of the incident.

“We got a complaint that some hoodlums blocked the road because a man was killed; we have deployed our officers in the place to clear the blockade and we are investigating the matter,” Mr Elkana said.
