Orji Kalu’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited, has applied for a stay of execution of the judgment which ordered its winding up and forfeiture of its assets to the Federal Government.

Justice Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court in Lagos gave the order for the company’s wind-up on December 5.

Kalu, however, was jailed for 12 years after being convicted of N7.65 billion fraud.

The company in the application filed by its lawyer, K.C. Nwufo, said its appeal filed on December 8 would be prejudiced if the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) went on to execute the winding-up order before the determination of the appeal.

The firm said it believed that its appeal has a high likelihood of success, pledging that it would prosecute the appeal with dispatch.

Kalu also filed an application before the court praying for a post-conviction bail pending the outcome of his appeal.

The former Abia State governor said he had health challenges which the medical facilities in the prison could not handle, adding that as a serving senator, the interest of his constituents would be jeopardised if he was kept behind bars.
