We’ll take you out of Senate, Akpabio clashes with Oshiomhole

Senate President Godswill Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday warned Senator Adams Oshiomhole during a disagreement at plenary over Senate rules.

The incident occurred during consideration of the votes and proceedings when Senator Oshiomhole raised a point of order.

Senate President Akpabio said such interventions were not allowed at that stage under the Senate Standing Orders 2023 as amended.

Oshiomhole continued to press his objection, prompting Akpabio to call on former Chief Whip Orji Kalu to clarify the rule. Mr Kalu said points of order are not permitted during that stage.

Senate Whip Tahir Monguno also cautioned Oshiomhole and warned that disciplinary steps could be taken.

Akpabio then issued a warning. “Oshiomhole, if you become unruly, we will use the rules to take you out of the Senate,” he said.

He added, “We should not just go home, buy forms and come here without knowing the rules.”

The disagreement lasted for several minutes before proceedings continued.

Senator Adamu Aliero later moved a motion for the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings, which was seconded by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.

The development follows a recent amendment to the Senate Standing Rules.

The Senate amended Orders 4 and 5 to change eligibility for presiding and principal offices.

Under the changes, only senators who have served at least two consecutive terms before nomination can contest for such positions.

The amendment also sets ranking as a condition for nominations, from former presiding officers to other members.

The change means first-term senators, including Oshiomhole, are not eligible to contest for presiding offices.

Proceedings later continued without further disruption.
