Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has responded to comments by Babachir Lawal on Peter Obi, following his recent political moves.

Mr Onanuga supported Mr Lawal’s position and criticised Mr Obi’s approach to party politics.

Lawal, who supported Obi in the 2023 election, had said the former Anambra governor prefers consensus arrangements instead of party primaries. He also accused Obi of leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for personal reasons.

Reacting in a post on X on Wednesday, Onanuga said Lawal had come to a new understanding about Obi.

“The scales have now fallen from the eyes of Babachir Lawal,” he wrote. “Obi cannot build a party. He takes advantage of what others have created and seeks to benefit himself.”

Onanuga also said Obi prefers consensus arrangements that favour him and avoids party contests.

Lawal had earlier said a politician who avoids primaries should not seek elective office, adding that Obi prefers outcomes that place him as candidate.

The comments follow Obi’s move from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso.
