Elections: NYSC members, other ad-hoc staff protest non-payment of allowances

NYSC members protest

Several ad-hoc staff including members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) attached to Ward 1, Anwar Islam Agege, on Saturday morning protested the non-payment of their allowances by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The protesting INEC ad-hoc staff carried placards as early as 6:30 a.m. demanding payment of their allowances.

Some of the placards read: “Pay our inconvenience allowance, pay our bonuses Agege ward 1. How can we be working and not receiving our due entitlements?”

A member of the NYSC said: “Those holding our money should release them immediately.”

They were later addressed by the chairman of Agege local government, who promised to ensure the payment of their allowances.

Reports say INEC ad-hoc staff are to be paid N14,000 as allowance; N4,000 for inconvenience and N10,000 as bonus.

There were also protests at Ojo and Iba collation centres in Lagos on Saturday over unpaid allowances.

The collation centres are located at St. Michael Nursery and Primary School, Costain Road, Ojo, and Local Authority Primary School, Iba.

As at 9.30 a.m, the adhoc staff were seen chanting. “No Pay, No Work’’ at the collation centres, refusing to resume duty at the polling units in the area.
