Nigerians hail Punch newspaper for labelling Buhari major general

Nigerians have commended The Punch newspapers for its decision to now include the prefix, Major General, in addition to President Muhammadu Buhari in protest of the disregard of the rule of law.

The newspaper’s move followed the outrage that greeted the rearrest of the convener of RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, last Friday by the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The Punch said in an editorial on Wednesday entitled ‘Buhari’s lawlessness: Our stand’ that Buhari’s administration would now be referred to as a regime “until they purge themselves of their insufferable contempt for the rule of law.”

The Presidency, however, said that the newspaper’s action is a testimony that the press is not being subdued.

Nigerians on Twitter have hailed the newspaper for its boldness in criticising the president.
