Nigerians express shock at Amodu Shaibu’s death

Reactions have continued to trail the shock demise of former Super Eagles coach, Shaibu Amodu.

The 58-year-old, who was reported to have passed away in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday, will be buried same day in his hometown Okpella, Edo State.

Yet to recover from the painful exit of Stephen Keshi, another ex-coach of the three-time African champions, Nigerians could not believe another tragedy could befall them just in the space of three days.

“Right now I’m confused, I don’t know what to say,” Adegboye Onigbinde, who took over from Amodu in 2002 stated.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick, who was on his way back to Benin City only 24 hours after returning from visiting late Keshi’s family, said “this is another tragedy too many. We are still talking about Keshi’s death, and now Amodu is gone. I’m short of words.”

He added: “Amodu’s name was synonymous with the Super Eagles. You can’t talk about the history of Super Eagles without Amodu getting prominent chapters.”

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, who was on his way to Shaibu’s hometown for the burial on Saturday, said “This is most shocking. We are yet to recover from the death of Stephen Keshi.”

Adding his voice to the debacle, former coach of the Golden Eaglets, Godwin Izilein, revealed he was still in “trance” at the news of Amodu’s demise.

Hear him: “I am in a trance. Amodu was a great guy. Seeing his body in the mortuary is a confirmation that he is gone.

“I don’t just know what is happening anymore. We were together last night and he complained of nothing.

“He was hale and hearty. I got him a driver and he was happy with it. I even went with him to the Commissioner of Police’s office to sort out some family issues last night.”
