Executive director of the National Film and Video Censors Board, Shaibu Husseini, has called for stronger structure and higher production standards in faith-based filmmaking in Nigeria.

He shared photos from the event on his Instagram page on Friday.

Dr Husseini was the keynote speaker at the opening of the Redeemed International Christian Film Festival held at Glory Arena, Redemption Camp, Ogun State on Thursday. His speech focused on the growth of faith based films and the need for the sector to adopt more formal industry systems.

He said that while Christian drama has a strong spiritual base, it often struggles with scale, technical quality and wider audience reach compared to mainstream film production.

He called for what he described as a non negotiable approach to excellence, saying the Church should invest more in technical quality and stronger storytelling that can reach a modern and diverse audience. He also stressed the importance of digital distribution and closer collaboration with professional filmmakers.

He attended the festival with staff of the National Film and Video Censors Board from its Lagos and Abeokuta offices.

The event was organised to promote values such as love, redemption and moral responsibility through film.

Dr Husseini was appointed Director General of the National Film and Video Censors Board in January 2024. Since taking office, he has pushed reforms aimed at modernising film classification, improving regulatory processes, increasing efficiency through digitisation and strengthening compliance and professionalism in the Nigerian film industry, including its growing digital and streaming space.
