New Masquerade actress Lizzy ‘Ovularia’ Evoeme dies at 81

Veteran actress Lizzy Evoeme, popularly known as Ovularia, in the rested NTA comedy series New Masquerade, is dead.

The family announced her passing in a recent statement signed by Evoeme Emekalam.

“Friends, fans, colleagues, the family of the legendary actress, Elizabeth Lizzy ‘Ovularia’ Evoeme, would like to notify the public, all those who loved her and her work in ‘The new Masquerade,’ of her passing. Elizabeth ‘Ovularia’ Evoeme will be dearly missed and was extremely loved by her family and also by you, her fans.

“We thank you all for your support and for respecting our privacy at this time. God bless you all and may our dear Elizabeth ‘Ovularia’ Evoeme rest in perfect peace, now and always,” the statement read.

According to a family member, the actress died in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

On November 5, 2019, Ovularia’s rumoured death was reportedly announced on Twitter by one Churchill Ebhodaghe without any detail regarding the cause of her rumoured expiration.

Dismissing the rumour, Ovularia, on November 8, 2019, reportedly said that those behind the rumour deserved to be punished.

Born on December 1, 1942, Ovularia was prominent in the Nigerian TV space as an actress from 1982 to 1993 prior to the advent of Nollywood. She was originally named Elizabeth which was later shortened to Lizzy.

Ovularia is also known for her Sins of the Fathers which she acted alongside Pete Edochie, Liz Benson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Patrick Doyle, Patience Ozokwo and the late Prince James Uche.

New Masquerade, for which is most popular, also starred the likes of Chika Okpala (Zebrudaya), Claude Eke (Jegede Sokoya), James Iroha (Giringori), Christy Essien-Igbokwe (Apena), and David Ofor (Clarus) was one of the most popular Nigerian soaps of the 1980s.

The actress who died at age 81, once explained that she never knew the meaning of her stage name Ovularia.
