My wife and I lost almost everything to Otedola Bridge tanker explosion – Jimi Odumosu

Veteran filmmaker and CEO of Jimi Odumosu Productions, Jimi Odumosu, has expressed profound sorrow after a fatal gas explosion destroyed his home, studio and film academy in the Otedola Bridge area of Lagos.

The 72-year-old shared his pain in a Facebook page on Friday, saying the fire incident, which occurred on March 11, 2025, completely wiped out everything he and his wife had laboured for.

“After a month of severe, agonizing pain, I still feel utterly devastated from the shock of that fatal gas explosion which occurred on March 11, 2025, by Otedola Bridge, Lagos,” he said.

He revealed that the property served as his residence, office and the LagCity Film Academy where many aspiring filmmakers were trained.

“My house, which I used as office, film studio, and school—the LagCity Film Academy—was completely gutted by the merciless fire. My wife and I practically lost everything we had laboured for over the years,” he added.

Despite his personal loss, Odumosu expressed sympathy for others affected by the tragedy.

“But my heart goes out to all those who lost their loved ones like the newly wedded couple, Otunba Balogun’s driver, and other such unfortunate individuals who were so gruesomely cut down in their prime,” he said.

“May their souls rest in peace, and may the good Lord help their families and friends to bear the irreparable loss.”

The newlyweds he referred to have been identified as Dozie and Joan Okoye, who died in their vehicle during the explosion.

Several other lives were lost and numerous vehicles were burnt in the inferno, which occurred when a petrol-laden tanker fell and exploded on the busy highway.

Odumosu also extended condolences to neighbouring business owners who suffered significant damage in the fire.

“I also empathise with the owners of De Twist Dental Clinic, Mr. Tope Ojo, and the owner of Gbemy’s Hair for their losses. It is well,” he said.

Emergency services, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, responded swiftly to the scene, working to control the fire and evacuate survivors.

Jimi Odumosu, known for his pioneering contributions to Nigerian film and television, had turned his residence into a multi-purpose creative space.

His LagCity Film Academy served as a training ground for young filmmakers and creatives, making the loss a painful blow to Nollywood’s grassroots development.
