A 47-year-old man, Adebayo Adeosun, who allegedly collected goods valued at N1 million under false pretences, was on Thursday brought before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

Adeosun, who lives at No. 26 Akintoye St., Iyana-Ilogbo in Ota, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining under false pretences.

The prosecutor, Insp. Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 1 at about 12.30 p.m at Iju in Ota, Ogun.

Mustapha said that the accused collected a freezer and other valuable items valued at N1 million on pretexts to assist the complainant, Bukola Okewoye, to sell and remit the money.

“Unfortunately, the accused, after selling the goods, converted the money to his personal use,” he said.

Mustapha said that the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Matthew Akinyemi, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N400, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Akinyemi said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed.

He also ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government and their addresses should be verified by the police.

The case was adjourned until April 25, for hearing.
