A man identified as Jelili Lawal has been arrested for allegedly raping a 78-year-old woman in Lagos.

The police said during parade of the suspect on Monday that the 41-year-old bus driver allegedly committed the act on January 1 at about 8pm.

The septuagenarian had missed her way to her house in Ketu when she approached Mr Lawal at Maryland in Ikeja, for description.

“The woman was delighted and so she entered the bus unknown to her that Jelili had other intentions.

“The suspect drove the victim to a location in Oloti Village off Adeniyi Jones Ikeja and raped her without regards to her age.

“While the suspect was at it, the woman let out a cry that attracted someone in the neighbourhood who quickly called the police and directed them to the location where the cry emanated.

“That was how the police caught the suspect in the act and rescued the old woman who was already bleeding from her private parts as a result of the assault on her dignity.

“The victim has been taken to the hospital and she’s being counseled by trauma specialist,” Lagos police commissioner, Edgal Imohimi, said.

Mr Imohimi added that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation was over.
