Liverpool fans stage ticket walkout protest as Sunderland earn valuable point

Liverpool fans staged a planned walkout in protest of new ticket price in a game their team lost a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 with Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday.

Roberto Firmino opened the scoring after a goalless first half with a header just before the hour mark, before the Brazilian teed up Adam Lallana to score into an empty goal 10 minutes later.

The home team, without head coach, Jurgen Klopp, who missed due to illness, thought they were cruising towards a famous victory.

But in the 77th minute with the Reds still two goals up, fans walked out of the stadium to show their dissatisfaction at the £18 ticket price hike.

The club’s hierarchy had announced a £77 price for the new main stand and fans decided to stage a protest in the game against the move.

Adam Johnson ensured a tense finish at Anfield after his low free-kick squirmed under Simon Mignolet’s hand with 10 minutes remaining, and Jermain Defoe scored the equaliser with one minute left.

Liverpool moved to 35 points but remained 9th – while Sunderland are second from bottom with 20 points.

Tottenham moved ahead of Manchester City to second position on the log with a slim victory over Watford at White Hart Lane.

A second-half tap-in from Kieran Trippier was the difference as Spurs moved to 48 points, five below leaders, Leicester City.

Nigeria striker, Odion Ighalo, was in action for the entire duration of the game but failed to test Hugo Lloris.
