Government shuts down 45 unapproved schools, buildings on Lagos Island

Lagos State Government on Thursday shut down 45 unapproved schools and buildings on Lagos Island following the collapse of a three-storey building at Ita-Faji which killed several school children.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had promised to clamp down on illegal structures across the state after visiting the site of the building collapse on Wednesday.

Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) began sealing off illegal and distressed structures and unapproved schools in the area on Thursday.

General Manager, LASBCA, Lekan Shodeinde, said the move was necessitated by the Ita Faji disaster to prevent future occurrence of such calamity.

He said the agency would work with the Office of Education Quality Assurance under the Lagos State Ministry of Education and other relevant agencies of government to achieve the desire result of conducive, safe and secure environment for learning for the teeming population of students in the state.

“We need to be our brothers’ keeper by doing the needful to avert unavoidable calamities and invariably saving lives and properties of fellow Lagosians,” he said.
