Ambode begins demolition of distressed buildings on Lagos Island

Following the collapse of a building on Wednesday on Lagos Island, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the demolitionof distressed buildings in the area.

Several school children and adults died in the collapse of the three-storey building at Ita-Faji area of Lagos Island.

Backed by policemen, officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) on Friday stormed Freeman Street, Epetedo, Lagos Island, around 9:50am and immediately began demolition.

As at 10 a.m. on Friday, a three-Storey building at 60 Freeman Street was being demolished.

General Manager of LASBCA, Lekan Shodeinde, said 20 buildings out of 180 marked would be demolished on Friday.

Mr Shodeinde said the landowners had already been served notices dating back to 2013.

Ambode had promised to clamp down on illegal structures across the state after visiting the site of the building collapse on Wednesday which had earlier been marked for demolition.
