Lagos State Government has shut down Dowen College, Lekki, to allow investigation into the death of a student of the school Sylvester Oromoni.

A spokesman for the ministry of education Ganiu Lawal said on Friday in a statement that the commissioner for education Folasade Adefisayo announced the closure after meeting with the school management and staff.

“The Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Dowen College, Lekki, pending the outcome of an investigation into the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, a student of the school,” the statement read.

“Commissioner for Education Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo announced the closure after a meeting with the School Management and Staff.

“The Commissioner called for calm, saying no effort will be spared in getting to the root of the incident.”

The death of the 12-year-old student had sparked outrage from the public.

His parents said he was bullied and attacked by senior students for refusing to join a cult. But the school refuted the claim, saying Oromoni sustained the injuries which led to his death while playing football.

Meanwhile, Dowen College had in an email sent to parents early Friday announced the school would be closed on Friday, December 3 and Monday, December 6 because of the incident.
