Kidnapped MAUTECH professor regains freedom

Police in Adamawa have confirmed the release of Professor Adamu Zata of Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH), Yola.

The professor of soil science was kidnapped early Monday at his residence in Girei, near Yola.

The lecturer’s younger brother, a veterinary doctor, Sheda Zata, was killed in the process.

Adamawa police spokesman, Suleiman Yahaya, said on Thursday that Prof. Zata was released Wednesday between 9 pm to 10 pm.

Zata had earlier been kidnapped last October at his residence.

He was released after his family reportedly paid a ransom of N2 million.

The police also confirmed the arrest of two suspected kidnappers in Song Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Yahaya told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the suspects were apprehended after they wrote a letter to their target, threatening to kidnap him if he failed to pay certain amount of money.

He said that the suspects would be prosecuted at the end of investigation.
