Kidnapped Catholic priest in Delta regains freedom

A priest of the Issele-Uku Catholic Diocese in Delta State who was kidnapped on Saturday has regained his freedom.

Rev. Fr. Samuel Agwameseh was released by his abductors on Monday night.

He is the parish priest of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Issele-Mkpitime, in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

His abductors had earlier demanded N20 million for his freedom.

The cleric was kidnapped on Saturday while returning from the neighbouring Onicha-Olona town where he had gone for the production of the church weekly bulletin meant for Sunday’s masses.

Delta police commissioner, Adeyinka Adeleke, confirmed the release of the priest but gave no information if any ransom was paid.

“The priest was released last night but I’m not aware if a ransom was paid or not,” he said.
