Nigerians are paying tributes on social media to the late Moshood Abiola, popularly known as MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on June 6, 2019, posthumously awarded Abiola the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), an honour reserved only for presidents.

The president afterwards declared that the nation would henceforth celebrate her Democracy Day on June 12 rather than the previous May 29 when Nigeria returned to civilian rule from military dictatorship.
