Ibrahimovic nets brace as PSG wallop Rennes

French Ligue 1 Champions, Paris Saint-Germain, trashed Rennes 4-0 on Friday at Parc des Princes to equal a record haul of 89 points for a season with three games left.

PSG forward, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, scored twice to hand Les Parisiens a huge win for a 30-point margin at the summit.

The 34-year-old went close with a deft free-kick in the first half but also skewed wide with a poor lob from near halfway.

After Maxwell scored in the 50th minute, poking the ball through defender Joris Gnagnon’s legs and expertly curling home, Ibrahimovic stretched to poke in winger Angel Di Maria’s cross four minutes later.

He then thumped in a superb shot from 20 yards out for his 34th league goal of the season, before Uruguay forward, Edinson Cavani, curled in a late goal for his 16th of the season.

PSG coach, Laurent Blanc, could not hide his excitement.

“It shows that we’ve played consistently well from start to finish this season,” said Blanc.

“Last season we wouldn’t have thought we could match this record.”

Ibrahimovic is well poised to break Carlos Bianchi’s record of 37 league goals set in the 1977-78 season.

The Sweden international, who is out of contract in June, is yet to commit to a new contract and has been reportedly linked with a switch to Manchester United.
