Eighteen passengers and driver of a commercial bus died on Sunday when the vehicle had a head-on collision with a tanker on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in the Fidiwo/Ajebo area.

The accident occurred around 1pm at a section of the road where traffic had been diverted to a single lane due to construction work on the road.

Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident was caused by the driver of a loaded fuel tanker, which was travelling to Ibadan.

Akinbiyi explained that the tanker, with registration number RAN 571 XA, was trying to overtake another vehicle when it had a head-on collision with the Lagos-bound commercial bus, killing all the passengers and the driver instantly.

A Dangote truck, registered as AJG 40 XA, loaded with bags of cement, which the fuel tanker was trying to overtake, was also involved in the crash.

The registration number of the bus was AGL 373 XR.

Akinbiyi said, “Our men  who were at the scene of the accident said that all the 18 passengers in the bus and the driver died on the spot, while the cement truck which had also given way to the overtaking tanker was also affected by the impact of the crash.”
