The House of Representatives on Tuesday mandated its Committee on Sports to meet with the Amaju Pinnick and Chris Giwa factions to resolve the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) crisis.
This followed a motion under matters of urgent public importance moved by Ossy Prestige (Abia-APGA).
While moving the motion, Prestige expressed worry that the leadership tussle involving the two factions would jeopardise Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup if not resolved.
“This will also affect Nigeria’s performance at the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio, Brazil,’’ the lawmaker said.
Supporting the motion, Nicholas Ossai (Delta-PDP), Samuel Ikon (Akwa Ibom-PDP) and Diri Douye (Bayelsa-PDP) described the move to resolve the crisis as a step in the right direction.
They said the country’s football ruling body must put its house in order in the interest of the country.
The motion was unanimously adopted through a voice vote and referred to the Committee on Sports for further legislative action.
The Committee on Sports is to invite all stakeholders, including the Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung; Head of the ministry’s Legal Department and officials of the NFF.
It is to report back to the House within two weeks for further legislative input.
