Guardiola is killing Iheanacho, Owen cries out

Kelechi Iheanacho

Former Liverpool forward, Michael Owen, believes Manchester City striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, has suffered a loss of confidence under manager, Pep Guardiola.

Iheanacho, 20, was a regular feature under Manuel Pellegrini last season but has struggled since Guardiola took over the helms at the Etihad.

Despite his impressive goalscoring record in which he has averaged a goal in every 95.6 minutes, the youngster has only started five games this term.

His last appearance was on Monday in which he lasted just 45 minutes before being replaced by Sergio Aguero as City defeated Burnley 2-0.

Owen, who scored 150 Premier League goals for Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Stoke City, has lamented the player’s regression under the Spaniard.

“Iheanacho isn’t the same player he was once,” the 37-year-old said on Monday.

“His confidence has taken a hit; I think he plays with a lot of pressure as he is unsure what could happen next unlike when Pellegrini was in charge.

“He is surrounded by players he knows have the trust of the manager unlike during Pelligrini’s reign where he has the trust of the manager and knows it, he has regressed under Guardiola. He is under pressure.”
