Griezmann explains funny phone call celebration

Antoine Griezmann is now the overwhelming favourite to win both the Euro 2016 best player and top scorer awards following his brace for France against Germany on Thursday night.

The Atletico Madrid forward now has six goals to his name this tournament, putting him three clear of Olivier Giroud, Dimitri Payet, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Alvaro Morata and Gareth Bale.

The 25-year-old has often celebrated his goals at this summer’s European Championships by performing some sort of Ronaldinho-esque phone celebration – but why does he do it?

Well, rather than leaving us all to guess, Griezmann has revealed why – and it’s pretty much the most modern day footballer thing ever.

The Frenchman isn’t copying the celebrations of former greats Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry; he is, in fact, paying tribute to the dance move from the popular song ‘Hotline Bling’ by Drake.

“I’ve been doing it when I score for Atletico and I should have done it when I scored against Albania, but the emotion was too much and I forgot about it,” Griezmann was quoted as saying by Goal.com.

“The same thing happened when I equalised against Ireland. For the second goal, I remembered.”

Incredibly, Griezmann now sits fourth in the list of all-time top scorers at the European Championships.

Ronaldo and Michel Platini lead the way on nine each, Alan Shearer has seven to his name, and now Griezmann has six.

Speaking after his heroics on Thursday, France head coach Didier Deschamps said: “He’s a great player and he proved that against Germany.

“He works very hard, along with Olivier Giroud from a defensive perspective he made us a very compact unit.

“He has this speed and technical ability, he had a few chances.

“He’s a very important player just as he has been with Atletico Madrid throughout the season.”

France face Portugal in the final at the Stade de France on Sunday.
