Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has been nominated in the best World Music Category at the 2019 Grammy Award for his Black Times album.

The award nominations were announced Friday.

The youngest son of late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will be contesting the category with four other nominees.

They are Bombino – Deran, Fatoumata Diawara – Fenfo, Soweto Gospel Choir – Freedom and Yiddish Glory – The Lost Songs of World War II.

The category is for albums containing at least 51% playing time of new vocal or instrumental World Music recordings.

The 2019 Grammy ceremony is set to hold on February 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, US.

Earlier in October, Kuti debunked rumours of his nomination for the Grammy awards after he made an Instagram post soliciting for votes.

Seun’s brother Femi Kuti has bagged four Grammy nominations in the World Music Category in the past.

He got his first nomination in 2003 for the album Fight to Win. Subsequent nominations came in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

Femi is yet to win a Grammy.
