Ex-minister ‘Mama Taraba’ dies in Egypt

Former minister of women affairs Senator Aisha Al-Hassan, popularly known as Mama Taraba, has died in Cairo, Egypt.

Aged 61, Al-Hassan resigned in 2018 as a minister in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet to contest for the Taraba governorship seat in the United Democratic Party in 2019.

She was the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in 2015.

“Mama (Al-Hassan) died in a hospital today in Cairo. We will miss her,” her former aide told PUNCH on Friday on the condition of anonymity.

Born on September 16, 1959 in Jalingo, Taraba State to Abubakar Ibrahim, Al-Hassan was appointed the first female attorney-general of Taraba in 1997.

She was appointed the first female chief registrar of the High Court of the FCT in December 2003, voluntarily retiring from the FCT judiciary as chief registrar on December 31, 2009.
