Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has lamented police brutality in Nigeria as thousands of youths march against the notorious police unit the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Ozil, 31, in a tweet on Sunday called on his millions of fans to join the conversation to force the Nigerian government into heeding to the demand for the end of SARS.

“Horrible to hear what’s been going on in Nigeria. Let’s make this a trending topic everywhere,” he wrote.

“#EndSARS – My thoughts go out to everyone who has been affected. 🇳🇬💚 #EndPoliceBrutality.”

The clamour for the end of SARS has been on for years. It however gained international attention in the past week as celebrities join the campaign.

Meanwhile, Ozil is yet to feature for Arsenal since the restart of football after the coronavirus-induced lockdown.
