The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has transferred the immediate-past governor of Anambra State Willie Obiano to its headquarters in Abuja.

This followed reports that Mr Obiano had been released from detention.

Spokesman of the anti-graft agency Wilson Uwujaren told NAN that the ex-governor was transferred to Abuja on Friday morning.

“The ex-governor was arrested in Lagos, but was moved to Abuja this morning (Friday),” he said.

Obiano was taken into custody on Thursday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The ex-governor had only handed over to his successor Prof Charles Soludo hours before his arrest.

The 66-year-old has been on the radar of the EFCC for some time on allegations of money laundering.

The erstwhile governor was on his way to board a flight to Houston, Texas, US before he was picked up by the anti-graft agency.

It was gathered that Obiano was arrested for allegedly mismanaging over N17bn Paris Club refund and security vote.

He is also being probed over some suspicious projects, including the Umueri International Airport project whose cost was believed to be inflated.
