Former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, was Friday released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Obanikoro’s associate, Demola Olarewaju, confirmed the release to Premium Times, saying “he has been released and now resting in Abuja”.

Punch reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart was released at about 5pm.

His Nigerian and American passports were confiscated.

Obanikoro was detained on October 17 after returning from the United States to submit himself to the EFCC on fraud allegations.

He was said to have paid N100 million to the EFCC out of the over N800 million of public funds he was accused of spending.

There are reports that signed he signed an undertaking to return N480m to the Federal Government.

Obanikoro’s lawyer, James Onoja (SAN), said his client’s passports would be returned to him anytime he requests for them.

“Well, we have presented all the guarantors and perfected his bail conditions, so the passports seizure shouldn’t be a big deal,” Mr. Onoja said. “If he intends to travel, he will apply for it and they will return them back to him.”

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode; former FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, and former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, are still detained by the anti-graft agency over various allegations of financial wrongdoing.
