The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed on Monday that its operatives arrested 60 suspected internet fraudsters during an award ceremony at Conference Hotel in Abeokuta, Ogun.

The hotel which is owned by former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel had raised alarm that EFCC operatives raided its premises on Sunday morning, shooting indiscriminately and scaring its customers. Spokespersons of the commission’s offices in Lagos and Ibadan denied knowledge of the incident.

However, EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren in a statement said 60 suspects were arrested during the raid at an event tagged Peer Youths Awards.

He added that investigation later revealed that the event was organised to reward high-level internet fraudsters.

Some of the items recovered from the suspects at the point of arrest include exotic cars, electronic devices, laptop computers and mobile phones.

Mr Uwujaren said the suspects would soon be charged to court.
