Edo: Tight security as Obaseki takes oath of office

There was tight security within and around the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, on Saturday as Godwin Obaseki was sworn-in as the new governor of Edo State.

Phillip Shuaibu was also sworn-in as deputy governor.

The oath of office was administered by Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Cromwell Idahosa, officially ending the tenure of Adams Oshiomhole who served for two terms spanning eight years.

Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had on September 28 won the governorship race by defeating Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Oshiomhole, whose government was first inaugurated on November 12, 2008, handed over to Obaseki on Friday night in a brief ceremony at the Government House.

The ex-governor drove to the inauguration venue in a green Jeep in company of his wife and reviewed a parade mounted by the state police command.

Security personnel at the inauguration were drawn from the Police, Army, Department of State Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Dignitaries at the event included Senate President Bukola Saraki, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed

Some others were Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun, APC governorship candidate in Ondo, Rotimi Akeredolu, and industrialist, Aliko Dangote.
