US President-elect Donald Trump has been named as Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2016.

The property tycoon took the title after winning an unexpected victory over Hillary Clinton in November’s presidential election.

“For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year,” the magazine wrote.

Mr Trump told NBC’s Today show shortly after the announcement it was a “great honour” which “meant a lot” to him.

He was chosen from a shortlist that included Mrs Clinton and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The former leader of the UK Independence Party, Nigel Farage, was also on the list for his role in the successful campaign for Britain to leave the European Union.

Mrs Clinton came second in the selection.
