Dasuki’s father, deposed Sultan of Sokoto, dies at 92

A former Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki, on Monday night died of age related ill health at a private hospital in Abuja.

Born on December 31, 1923, he was 92 at the time of his death.

Dasuki was deposed as Sultan in 1996 by the late former military dictator, General Sani Abacha, and succeeded by Muhammadu Maccido who died in an ADC Airline crash on October 29, 2006,

He was banished from Sokoto and lived the rest of his life in Kaduna.

The deceased was the father of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, who is currently facing corruption charges.

Prior to becoming Sultan, Dasuki held the traditional title of Baraden Sokoto.

He was the first Sultan from the Buhari line of the house of Uthman Dan Fodio.

A close associate of the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello, and the late Islamic scholar, Abubakar Gumi, Dasuki was influential in the founding of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI).

He tried to unite the Muslim ummah through the reorganisation of JNI and the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), giving impetus to the appointment of Lateef Adegbite as the first Yoruba secretary general of NSCIA.

Dasuki is expected to be buried according to Islamic rites on Tuesday.
