Activist Deji Adeyanju has been attacked alongside other members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) who joined in protest on Monday to demand the release of Omoyele Sowore.

Mr Adeyanju and others were reportedly protesting peacefully at the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) when they were attacked by suspected thugs.

The protesters were at the NHRC headquarters to present a letter of protest to the commission.

Pictures circulating on social media show an injured Adeyanju who is reportedly being treated at an undisclosed hospital.

It is not known why the protesters were attacked.

However, hours before the protest, Adeyanju tweeted saying they were getting ready for the exercise to demand the release of Mr Sowore, a Cross River-based journalist, Agba Jalingo among others.

“We are getting ready for Abuja & Lagos this morning for SOWORE, AGBA JALINGO, DADIYATA & others. Time is 9am. Venue: NHRC,” he said.

Sowore was on December 6 rearrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) a few hours after he was released having spent 124 days in custody.
