Court dismisses suit seeking to stop Rivers’ election results collation

INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit seeking to stop Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from collating results of March 9 governorship and state assembly elections in Rivers State.

The suit was filed by African Action Congress (AAC), its governorship candidate in Rivers, Biokpomabo Awara, and another member of the party, Ben-Gurion Peter.

Justice Inyang Ekwo upheld the preliminary objection filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the court’s jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Ekwo ruled that the matter should have first hearing in an election petition tribunal.

The plaintiffs had prayed the court to stop INEC from resuming announcement of election results which it had earlier said was marred by violence and irregularities.
