Cotonou court releases Sunday Igboho’s wife, remands activist till Friday

The Court D’Appel De Cotonou has adjourned till Friday, July 23 the trial of Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho.

The court on Thursday ordered that his wife Ropo be released while the activist should be returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

Sunday Igboho and his wife were arrested on Monday night at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport, Cotonou. The couple was trying to catch a flight to Germany.

Prosecutors are accusing the activist of illegally obtaining a Beninise passport.

Shortly before the arrest, Nigerian authorities had raised alarm that the Yoruba activist was trying to get a fake passport.

Government lawyers refused to speak with the news media after the hearing but Sunday Igboho’s counsel expressed optimism.
