Nigerian chess guru and founder of Chess in Slums Africa Tunde Onakoya on Friday announced he will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon without losing a game.

Mr Onakoya announced this in a post on X, stating that the attempt would take place in New York.

“On the 17th of April 2024, I will attempt to break the Guinness World record for the longest Chess marathon in the heart of Times Square New York City for 58 hours without losing a game,” he wrote.

His motivation is driven by a mission to empower disadvantaged children.

“Doing this for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education,” he added.

Onakoya has also launched a fundraiser for $1 million.

“Our goal is to donate 1 million chess sets globally. To date we have secured 116,000 chess sets for global distribution, reaching over 25 countries,” he said on the website of the fundraising platform, Tiltify.

Calling for support, he wrote on X: “You guys have been rock solid for me through the years, so I need all of us to come together now more than ever to show the world that the Nigerian spirit is unwavering and we can do great things from a small place against all odds.”
