CHAN 2016: Rwanda advance to quarter-final with victory over Gabon

Host Rwanda became the first country to reach the quarter-final of the 2016 African Nations Champions following a well deserved 2-1 win over Gabon at the Amahoro National Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Ernest Sugira struck either side of the break for the Central Africans before Aaron Ondele reduced the deficit in Kigali.

Cote d’Ivoire later moved into second spot in Group A with three points after edging Morocco 1-0 at the same venue.

Yannick Zakri got the only goal for the Ivoirians, who fell 1-0 to Rwanda in the opening game of the competition.

Gabon and Morocco are currently bottom of the group with one point apiece and yet to win in the tournament.

Both teams will have to find a way of beating Cote d’Ivoire and Rwanda on Sunday if they are to stand a chance of progressing from the group.

Tomorrow’s game will see Group B leaders, DR Congo, face Angola while Cameroon battle Ethiopia.
